Denominaciones de origen de Cafés de Centroamérica

El consumo del café se ha incrementado en el mundo, y los consumidores están tras la búsqueda de nuevas variedades, en especial de los llamados cafés especiales, que tienen mejores precios de venta. Aprovechando esta tendencia y siguiendo en ejemplo exitoso de Colombia, Jamaica (Blue Mountain) y el Kona Hawaiano, un grupo de países de Centroamérica productores de café (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, México y Nicaragua) están trabajando en conjunto para el reconocimiento de una denominación de origen, aprovechando las ventajas de este instrumento de la propiedad industrial. Para ello han generado un Programa Cooperativo Regional para el Desarrollo Tecnológico de la Caficultura en Centroamérica (Promecafé) a través del cual han registrado las de denominaciones de origen del Café de Honduras "Maracala"), de Guatemala "Antigua" y de El Salvador "Apaneca-Ilamatepec". Promecafé está centrado ahora en la capacitación de los que intervienen en la cadena de producción y comercio, y en la ejecución de planes piloto para obtener cafés con denominación de origen en varios países de la región.

En sistema se vincula con institutos de café local, que cuentan con redes de catadores, abogados especialistas en legislación internacional y en sistemas de beneficio del grano. El programa ha publicado seis libros relacionados con el tema.

Por su parte en Panamá el gobierno y caficultores proyectan la construcción de un "Palacio del Café", que contará con un laboratorio de certificación de denominación de origen, un centro de entrenamiento para capacitar a baristas y un laboratorio de cocina para la preparación de productos y bebidas a base de café, así como laboratorios de cata.

VI European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean: the Madrid summits

By tomorrow we expect two mayor events. The European Commission officials and ministers of the Central American countries have been negotiating in Madrid the details of another trade agreement. This morning the ‘nacion’ newspaper announced that the six Central American countries and the European Union has finished negotiating after an exchange of positions that kept awake the representatives of the two blocks. They intend to announce the final agreement on Wednesday. Also tomorrow the EU's trade agreements with Colombia and Peru will be signed. Meanwhile, MERCOSUR is resuming talks with the EU.

Definitely, May has been the month for FTA between EU and Latin America. I am waiting to see the draft of the FTA between Central America countries with the EU since the one between EU and Peru-Colombia regarding Geographical Indications was a rip off!

Terra Group acquires Shell’s operation in Central America

Back in 2008, Shell, the oil company stated its intention of selling its Central American operations. One year later, the Honduran company has won the competition for Shell’s distribution and operation in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras (it previously obtained the operations in El Salvador). The agreement establishes that the Terra Group will uphold and respect existing contracts with suppliers and with tenants (see press release here in Spanish).

The sale was confirmed by Fabricio Pereira, manager at Shell Costa Rica. He explained that "the agreement includes operation, marketing and sales in those countries, including Shell's strategic alliances”. The agreement also includes the acquisition and license to use the brand in these countries.

Will Terra Group start to buy Shell in South America? Have you heard the joke "when you’ve lost all your marbles, you’ve become a shell collector!" (man and mollusc jokes here)
