Important news for those seeking information concerning patents, innovation and the prior art in Latin America comes with the announcement that, from week 33/2009 onwards (i.e. the week beginning 10 August), data from Colombia will be included in the European Patent Office's bibliographic database. Since the beginning of the year the EPO has already added data from Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Panama.

Write commentsWhile this news may seem to be good at first sight, the truth is that the Colombian Database is not a reliable source of information, at least patently speaking. Priority numbers and dates were updated, until not long ago, in a disorderly manner; And searches by keywords can only be done in the title and abstract, which needless to say, is simply not enough. On the other hand, the information is only updated -to some extent- as from 1992.
