BRICS on cooperation in intellectual property

In 2001 the economist Jim O'Neill came with the term BRIC in a study related to global economy. The acronym BRIC represented the 4 countries which at the time were considered to be of same newly advanced economic development: i.e. of Brazil, Russia, India and China. However, in 2011 in the third summit meeting, BRIC was known as BRICS as to represent the addition of South Africa.

The now established BRICS met this week during the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Representatives from all 5 countries got together to discuss a new goal: “to expand the cooperation between the countries in the area of IP.” The meeting which took place in Geneva, Switzerland was attended and supported by the Director General of WIPO, Francis Gurry, and it is said to “generate cooperation actions and periodic seminars for discussion of issues of common interest.”

Reunión de Directores de Oficinas de Propiedad Industrial de Iberoamérica

Directores de Oficinas de Propiedad Industrial de 19 países de América Latina y el Caribe se reúnen en Bayahibe, La Romana (República Dominicana) para analizar cuestiones de interés común para las agencias estatales de esa región.

El encuentro es auspiciado por la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI) y la Oficina Nacional de la Propiedad Industrial (Onapi) de República Dominicana y inició este martes 29 de mayo hasta el próximo viernes 1 de junio.

La agenda de la reunión está orientada a la gestión de las oficinas de PI y su rol respecto a los objetivos nacionales de desarrollo, busca que los directores de oficinas de PI de la región, junto con especialistas regionales, analicen temas de actualidad en materia de propiedad industrial y los principales desafíos que enfrentan.

Así mismo se darán orientaciones generales sobre las áreas futuras de cooperación en materia de PI en la región, a los fines de facilitar el diseño de los planes de acción y colaboración de la OMPI tanto a nivel de país como a nivel regional.La reunión cuenta con la asistencia del director de la oficina regional de la OMPI para América Latina y el Caribe, Carlos Mazal, el administrador principal de programas de la OMPI para la región, Oswaldo Gironés, y como anfitrión Juan José Báez, director general de la Onapi.

El encuentro cuenta con la participación de delegaciones de Argentina,. Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, España, Guatemala, Honduras, México, Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay, Venezuela y República Dominicana.

Brazil: meetings and more meetings

On Nov the 9th the auditorium of the National Institute of Technology (INT), in Rio de Janeiro, will see experts in technology transfer discussing around technology contracts, competition law and industrial policy. This meeting is sponsored by the Academy of Intellectual Property.

The panellists are: advocate Karin Klempp who specializes in international commercial contracts and intellectual property; Freitas Katia Pinto, economist and professor of the Academy of the INPI whose topic will be "integrating intellectual property and antitrust: the licensing of patents in Brazil." The meeting will be closed by advocate Richard Sichel from INPI.

Brazil to follow Colombia’s footsteps -- "Talk about joining the Madrid Protocol"
On Nov 11th Sao Paulo will see businessmen [perhaps they may be using a disguise - left] gathered in the National Industry Confederation (CNI). The discussion is to look at the results obtained in the countries that adopt the Madrid Protocol and how Brazil is preparing for this system. INPI informs that Brazil may join this international treaty that would result in simplifying and reducing the costs of protecting Brazilian trade marks abroad.

The speakers are: José Graça Aranha (regional director of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)) who would talk about the global experience; Bill Russell, Head of the Competition, Markets and Innovation Team, and responsible for encouraging innovation and competitive markets in England would cover the vision of the English on the Protocol; Mr Jorge Avila, President of the INPI will examine the impact of the system, while the director of Natura, Lucillene Prado, will speak about the expectations of the business in relation to adherence to this system.
