Last year we reported here that the Brazilian Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial (INPI) received an application for a geographical indication (GI) called Manguezais de Alagoas for propolis. That say, bee-happy! INPI has granted the said GI.
The red propolis of Alagoas is the resin collected by bees which is used in the pharmaceutical sector as well as in the cosmetic and food. This particular resin is rich on phenolic compounds which fights cell aging. Also according to a research carried out by the University of São Paulo, “the red propolis contains medical properties such as: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic”.
INPI notes that this is the first GI that relates to Brazilian biodiversity.
