11th Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP & Frontier Technologies: Infrastructure for Rights Holders and Innovation


The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will hold the Eleventh Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and Frontier Technologies (formerly WIPO Conversation on IP and AI) on 23 and 24 April 2025.

The theme of the eleventh session is “Infrastructure for Rights Holders and Innovation. The session aims to bring together stakeholders to discuss, inter alia, the challenges that AI poses for copyright, including rights management, attribution and compensation. 

The agenda comprises the following topics:
  • Copyright infrastructure.
  • Infrastructure for training data.
  • Infrastructure for outputs.
  • The EU AI Act and Code of Practice.

10th Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP & Frontier Technologies, AI Output: To Protect, or Not to Protect – that is the IP Question


The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will hold the Tenth Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and Frontier Technologies (formerly WIPO Conversation on IP and AI) on 5 and 6 November 2024.

The theme of the tenth session is “AI Output: To Protect, or Not to Protect—That is the IP Question.” The session aims to bring together stakeholders to discuss, inter alia, the relationship between AI-generated content and IP, evaluate current practices, and propose practical solutions.

The agenda comprises the following topics:
  • From patentability dilemmas to copyright conundrums: Economic perspective.
  • Current copyright landscape: Where does AI fit in?
  • Pay per use? AI outputs, training data and the infringement question.
  • Deepfakes, cheap fakes, voice jacking and other AI manipulations.
  • Technical cooperation for the benefit of all.
  • Connecting the dots: Industry solutions to identify AI outputs.

9th Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP & Frontier Technologies: Training the Machines – Bytes, Rights and the Copyright Conundrum


The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will hold the Ninth Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and Frontier Technologies (formerly WIPO Conversation on IP and AI) on 13 and 14 March 2024.

The theme of the ninth session is “Training the Machines—Bytes, Rights and the Copyright Conundrum”, which aims to bring together stakeholders to discuss the multifaceted relationship between IP and training data. The event will foster a holistic understanding of the impact of training data on the IP landscape by evaluating current practices, proposing practical solutions, and envisioning future direction.

The agenda comprises the following topics:
  • The current IP state of play: Training data containing copyright-protected works.
  • Does litigation really solve everything? A litigation tracker.
  • Can regulation keep up? Navigating the evolving regulatory landscape.
  • Can contractual frameworks mitigate the IP risk until regulation catches up?
  • Shaping a possible way forward: New approaches for the new AI age.
  • Presentation: Generative AI, training data and innovation – how large language models are acceleration scientific break throughs.

8th Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP & Frontier Technologies: Generative AI and IP


The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will hold the Eighth Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and Frontier Technologies (formerly WIPO Conversation on IP and AI) on 20 and 21 September 2023.

The theme of the eighth session is “Generative AI and IP”, aiming to bring together stakeholders to discuss the challenges generative AI may pose to the IP system and inter alia helping to establish best practices for the protection of creative works in the digital age.

The agenda comprises the following topics:

7th Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP & Frontier Technologies: IP and the Metaverse


The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will hold the Seventh Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and Frontier Technologies (formerly WIPO Conversation on IP and AI) on 29 and 30 March 2023.

The theme of the seventh session is “IP and the Metaverse”, aiming to bring together stakeholders to discuss the challenges the metaverse may pose to the IP system. The broad spectrum of frontier technologies enabling the metaverse, like AI, blockchain and the NFTs, AR and VR technologies, the Internet of Things and data processing, will be addressed.

The agenda comprises the following topics:
  • “All information looks like noise until you break the code” – Decoding the Metaverse.
  • Blueprints, plans and IP stories from the architects building the Metaverse.
  • Economics of the Metaverse.
  • Living, working and playing in the Metaverse: IP stories from the Metaverse.
  • A multiverse of IP issues.
  • The Future of IP in the digital economy and a fully virtual world.
  • DAOs, NFTs, smart contracts and other fantastic beasts and IP.
  • Playing games and knowing the IP score: content and more in the Metaverse.

6th Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP & Frontier Technologies: AI Inventions


The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will hold the Sixth Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and Frontier Technologies (formerly WIPO Conversation on IP and AI) from 21 to 22 September 2022.

The theme of the sixth session is “AI Inventions”, aiming to share information and build awareness around patent examination practices, tools, and guidelines for AI inventions. As such, it will be addressed:

  • What are the market trends, and how do these translate in terms of patent applications?
  • How autonomous is AI?
  • What role does it play as part of the inventive process or as an invention?
  • What questions does this raise for the IP system? 
  • How are IP Offices supporting AI inventors?

The provisional agenda is available here. The event will be held in a hybrid format. Registration is free and now open for WIPO members & Observers (onsite) and a wider audience (virtual)!

Registration is now open for the 4th Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP and Frontier Technologies!


As announced here, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will hold the Fourth Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and Frontier Technologies (formerly WIPO Conversation on IP and AI) from 22 to 23 September 2021.

The theme of the fourth session is “Data – beyond AI in a fully interconnected world”. Registration is now open here!

The agenda and the information about the format (e.g., only virtual meeting) will be provided afterwards. However, it has been already confirmed that the session will be available online, including a “video on demand recording [that] will also be published in due course”.

Likewise, you can respond to the Frontier Technologies and Data Questionnaire to share insights into “the challenges and opportunities you see, your stories and your views”. The responses will help to shape the fourth session.

Furthermore, the IP and Frontiers Technologies web page was revamped in light of preparing the fourth session of the WIPO Conversation. Check it out!
