7th Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP & Frontier Technologies: IP and the Metaverse


The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will hold the Seventh Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and Frontier Technologies (formerly WIPO Conversation on IP and AI) on 29 and 30 March 2023.

The theme of the seventh session is “IP and the Metaverse”, aiming to bring together stakeholders to discuss the challenges the metaverse may pose to the IP system. The broad spectrum of frontier technologies enabling the metaverse, like AI, blockchain and the NFTs, AR and VR technologies, the Internet of Things and data processing, will be addressed.

The agenda comprises the following topics:
  • “All information looks like noise until you break the code” – Decoding the Metaverse.
  • Blueprints, plans and IP stories from the architects building the Metaverse.
  • Economics of the Metaverse.
  • Living, working and playing in the Metaverse: IP stories from the Metaverse.
  • A multiverse of IP issues.
  • The Future of IP in the digital economy and a fully virtual world.
  • DAOs, NFTs, smart contracts and other fantastic beasts and IP.
  • Playing games and knowing the IP score: content and more in the Metaverse.
  • Jurisdiction and enforcing IP rights in the Metaverse.
  • Realizing the potential of the Metaverse.
  • Sharing session (Member States and IP Offices) – Open floor interventions and discussion: exchange of current practices between IP Offices on work around the Metaverse.
  • Open floor interventions (all participants).

WIPO PROOF ya está disponible en 10 idiomas


Como fue anunciado aquí, la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI) confirmó el año pasado que, su servicio en línea WIPO PROOF estaría disponible en 10 idiomas. 

Inicialmente, WIPO PROOF se puso en funcionamiento sólo en idioma inglés, el 27 de mayo de 2020. Sin embargo, a partir del 23 de julio de 2020, también se podía acceder al servicio en español y francés

Las 7 versiones restantes ya se han puesto en marcha, por lo que, actualmente WIPO PROOF está disponible en 10 idiomas: alemán, árabe, chino, coreano, español, francés, inglés, japonés, portugués y ruso

WIPO PROOF produce evidencia a prueba de manipulaciones con respecto a la existencia de un archivo digital en un tiempo determinado. Se puede acceder al mismo a través del Portal de PI de la OMPI en la categoría "Evidencia Digital" y el sitio web dedicado a WIPO PROOF

Recientemente, el servicio obtuvo certificaciones de prestador de servicios de confianza por el Instituto Europeo de Normas de Telecomunicación (ETSI) y la Organización Internacional de Normalización (ISO).

WHAT’S GOING ON THIS WEEK? 

The Online Seminar on the Analysis of the Amendments to Intellectual Property in Mexico (in Spanish) will be streamed on Facebook from 31 August to 3 September 2020. The event is organized by the Seminar of Patents, Trademarks and Copyright of the Faculty of Law of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The speakers are Geidy Lung (WIPO), Carmen Arteaga (UNAM), Reynaldo Urtiaga Escobar (UNAM), Hugo Contreras Lamadrid (INDAUTOR), Kiyoshi Tsuru, José Luis Caballero, Fernando Becerril, Bernardo Herrerías, Martín Michaus, Mauricio Jalife, José Juan Méndez, and Gastón Esquivel Santos. On 1 September 2020, the webinar Medical Technology and Application of Artificial Intelligence: Overview and Regulatory Framework (in Portuguese) will be streamed on YouTube. The event is organized by the Paulista Association of Intellectual Property (ASPI). The speakers are Patrícia Peck Pinheiro, Elza Durham and Gilberto Takata. The moderators are Gil Meizler and Eliane Beltrame. 

On the same day, the Venezuelan Institute of Industrial Property Agents (COVAPI) will hold the webinar The Right to Petition in light of Industrial Property and its protection under the Contentious Administrative procedure (in Spanish). The speakers are Luis G. Arévalo, José G. Torrealba and Joaquín Núñez. Ana E. Hernández will moderate the session. Register here

The Workshop on Intellectual Property for Media Professionals will take place from 1 to 3 September 2020. The workshop is organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI Brazil), the Science and Technology Park of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (TECNOPUC), and the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI). Some speakers are Marcelo Chimento (INPI Brazil), Aline Iramina (SDAPI) and Gustavo Martins de Almeida. Review here the program. 

On 2 September 2020, the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI) is organizing the webinar The Innovation System of Paraná (in Portuguese). The opening speakers are Maria Inez Araujo de Abreu (CESA) and Juliana L.B. Viegas (USP). The panellists are Aldo Nelson Bona (SETI) and José Maurino de Oliveira Martins (SEPARTEC). Claudia Crisostimo will moderate the session. 

The webinar Financing Tools for Health Innovation (in Spanish) will also be held on 2 September 2020. The event is organized by the European Connected Health Alliance (ECHAlliance). The speakers are María Apólito (Argentina), Juan Manuel Giner González (Argentina) and Carmelo M. Gordian (United States of America). Register here

Meanwhile, the Opening lecture of the Course Strategic management of trademarks portfolio will also take place on 2 September 2020. The course is organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI). The theme of the opening lecture is the International Trademark System. The speakers are José Graça Aranha (WIPO), Kone Cesário (UFRJ) and Luciany Pelisson Creado Becker (OAB PR). On the same day, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is offering the webinar Introduction to the Madrid Application Assistant. The webinar will provide an overview of the new WIPO tool which “is an electronic version of the official MM2” and imports the required information “directly from the Office of origin’s national/regional trademarks database”. 

On 3 September 2020, the following events are scheduled: 
  • Webinar: How to use WIPO PROOF, organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The webinar will include a Q&A session. 
  • Webinar: Online dispute resolution for IP issues (in Spanish), organized by the Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property (ASIPI). Speakers: Leandro Toscano (WIPO), Paul Corral (Catholic University of Ecuador) and Javier Fernández-Lasquetty. Moderator: Mary Fernández Rodríguez. 
  • Seminar: Theory of Intellectual Property (in Spanish), organized by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO). The seminar starts on 3 September 2020 and will last four months. More information here
  • Webinar: Anti-discrimination compliance in the fashion industry - measures and clauses for adequacy (in Portuguese), organized by the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI) and OAB Rio de Janeiro (the Order of Attorneys of Brazil). Speakers: Humberto Adami (OAB), Fabricio Oliveira (UFF) and Ana Paula de Paula (CDMD). Moderators: Deborah Portillo (CDMD) and Renata Lisboa (CDMD). 
Last but not least, the International Seminar: Copyright from a 20/20 perspective will take place on and 4 September 2020. The seminar is organized by the Colombian Center for Copyright (CECOLDA), the National Directorate of Copyright of Colombia (DNDA), the Colombian Center of Reprographic Rights (CDR) and the University of La Sabana. Some speakers are Carolina Romero (DNDA), Rafael Fariñas (CISAC), Natalia Gómez (CDR), Geidy Lung (WIPO), Facundo Recondo (AT&T), Gerardo Muñóz de Cote (Netflix), Horacio Gutiérrez (Spotify), María Strong (US Copyright Office), and Gustavo Schötz (Austral University). WHAT’S GOING ON THIS WEEK? 

On 25 August 2020, the webinar Artificial Intelligence: Big Controversies (in Portuguese) will take place. The event is organized by the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI). The speakers are Caroline Tauk and Eduardo Magrani. Register here

The webinar Relevant topics regarding the new legislation on copyright (in Spanish) was rescheduled so that it will be held on 26 August 2020. The event is part of the Permanent Seminar on Intellectual Property 2020-2 (SEPEPI) which is organized by the Legal Research Institute (IIJ) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The speaker is Hugo Contreras Lamadrid, Director General of the National Institute of Copyright (INDAUTOR). The webinar will be streamed on Facebook

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is offering the webinar Deep Dive: exploring Madrid Monitor also on 26 August 2020. Some “tips on how to make the most of Madrid Monitor’s features and benefits” will be provided. The speaker is Olivier Pierre. 

On 27 August 2020, the following webinars are scheduled: 
On 28 August 2020, the International Chamber of Commerce of Mexico (ICC Mexico) will hold the webinar Amendments to the Federal Copyright Law. The speakers are Oscar Estrada Chavez (Federal Court, IP Specialised Bench) and Hugo Contreras Lamadrid (INDAUTOR). 

On the same day, the forum Collective marks, certification marks and appellations of origin will take place. The event is organized by the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce of Colombia (SIC Colombia). Register here.

On 30 August 2020, the Foundation for Research on Law and Business (FIDE, acronym in Spanish) is organizing the panel The three main social, legal and economic models of AI: is there room for marriage?. The panel is part of the 24th edition of the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI), organized by CiTIUS (the Research Centre in Information Technology of the Singular Research Centres Network of the University of Santiago de Compostela). El servicio de pruebas digitales WIPO PROOF de la OMPI ya está disponible en español y francés


Como fue anunciado aquí, el 27 de mayo de 2020, la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI) puso en marcha su servicio en línea a nivel mundial WIPO PROOF, en idioma inglés.

Sin embargo, WIPO PROOF ya está disponible en español y francés desde ayer.

La OMPI ha confirmado que se podrá acceder al servicio en 10 idiomas, por lo que, se espera que las 7 versiones restantes se pongan en marcha en el transcurso del año 2020.

WIPO PROOF produce evidencia a prueba de manipulaciones con respecto a la existencia de un archivo digital en un tiempo determinado. Se puede acceder al mismo a través del Portal de PI de la OMPI en la categoría ‘Evidencia Digital´ y el sitio web dedicado a WIPO PROOF.

WHAT'S GOING ON THIS WEEK? 

The Michigan State University’s Center for Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection (A-CAPP Center) is holding the conference A Brand’s New World: The Future of Challenges in Brand Protection from 20 to 22 July 2020. The conference will address brand protection strategies and issues post-pandemic. The speakers include Hernan Albamonte (Philip Morris), Charles Olschanski (Tiffany), Cristina Posa (Amazon), Brian Fogarty (Nike), Lori Mayall (Gilead Sciences), Mike Gannon (3M), Mark Schildkraut (BD), Tara Steketee (Merck & Co.), Kasie Brill (GIPC), and Carolina Giuga (LEGO). Some moderators are Jeff Rojek (A-CAPP), Leah Evert-Burks (A-CAPP), and Kari Kammel (A-CAPP). The program and registration are available here

The Latin American International Arbitration Course (LAIAC) will take place from 20 July until 7 August 2020. The LAIAC is organized by the Geneva Center for International Dispute Settlement (CIDS). The program will cover procedural and substantive matters in commercial and investment arbitration. The course is addressed to lawyers, government, and public sector officials as well as advanced law students from Latin America and worldwide. The LAIAC will be instructed in English except for one lecture in Spanish. 

The International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) is offering the online course Copyright and the Business of Creative Industries from 20 July to 16 August. The instructor is Marisa Gandelman. The course will be taught in Spanish and Portuguese

The third encounter of the Seminar Innovation and Intellectual Property in post-pandemic scenarios (in Spanish) will be held on 21 July 2020. The event is organized by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of Industrial and Economic Law (CEIDIE) of the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires. The speakers are Diego Hurtado (MCyTArgentina), Eduardo Spitzer (Elea-Phoenix), Viviana Tellez Muñoz (South Centre), and Maximiliano Marzetti (CEIDIE-UBA). 

On 22 July 2020, it will take place the webinar The ABC of trademarks which is organized by the Mexican Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AMPPI). The speakers are Arturo González Martínez, Fernanda Díaz Aquino, and Flor Bermúdez Trejo. Catalina Lozada will moderate the session. 

The Foundation for Research on Law and Business (FIDE, acronym in Spanish) and the Transatlantic Intellectual Property Academy (TIPSA) will hold the Global Digital Encounters: IP Arbitration In A Digitally Enhanced World (Encounter 4), also on 22 July 2020. The event will provide an overview of the role of IP arbitration and mediation in a post-pandemic environment. The speakers are Catherine A. Rogers (Penn State Law) and Chung Nian Lam (WongPartnership). Ignacio de Castro (WIPO) will moderate the session. 

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI) is offering the webinar Online piracy in Brazil - Achievements and Challenges (in Portuguese) on 22 July 2020. The speakers are Daniel Steinmetz (Walt Disney), Alessandro Barreto (Ministry of Justice and Public Security), and Guilherme Farid Mischi Bou Chebl (PROCON-SP). 

On 23 July 2020, the following webinars are scheduled: 
  • Intellectual Property and Hackathons: Computer Program Registration, organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI). Opening speakers: Luiz Edgard Montaury Pimenta (ABPI) and José Graça Aranha (WIPO). Panellists: Gabriel Teixeira (1st  winner of Hackcovid19, computing category), Camila Perico (1st  winner of Hackcovid19, general category), and Helmar Alvares (INPI Brazil). Moderator: Patrícia Coimbra. 
  • Mediation under the WIPO Rules (in Spanish), organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The webinar will cover WIPO mediation rules for resolving IP and technology disputes. 
  • Cannabis regulation (in Spanish), organized by the Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property (ASIPI). Speakers: Maritza Reátegui (Peru), Viviana Cervieri (Uruguay), and Guillermo Carey (Chile). Moderator: Armando Arenas (Mexico). 
On 24 July 2020, the webinar IP Key LA to Host Virtual Seminar on Industrial Design Rights, will take place. The event is organized by the IP Key Latin America, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM). The program will cover the benefits and advantages of the Hague Agreement as well as the experiences of EU, Spain, and Mexico in such regard. A certificate of attendance will be provided. On the same day, the webinar Most remarkable judgments issued by the Court of Justice of the Andean Community (in Spanish) will be held. The webinar is organized by the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI), the Ecuadorian Intellectual Property Association (AEPI), the Colombian Association of Industrial Property (ACPI), and the Peruvian Association of Industrial Property and Copyright (APPI). The speakers are Hugo Gómez Apac (Court of Justice of the Andean Community, Peru), Gustavo García Brito (Court of Justice of the Andean Community, Bolivia), Marcos Mercado D., María del Carmen Arana, Andrés Rincón and Sasha Mandakovic. María Rosa Fabara will moderate the session. Register here


WIPO SURVEY ON BLOCKCHAIN AND IP ECOSYSTEM 

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is conducting a survey on blockchain and IP ecosystem. The purpose is to “gather information for a Blockchain Whitepaper that will identify how blockchain technology can contribute to establishing a robust, streamlined, cost-effective, inclusive, and transparent IP ecosystem in the era of digital transformation”. The deadline to participate is 31 July 2020

The whitepaper project is carried out by the Committee on WIPO Standards (CWS) Blockchain Task Force and involves a webinar series on the subject. The first webinar took place on 25 June 2020 (as announced here). The remaining two webinars will be held in the following months for discussing the survey’s findings and the content of the whitepaper. Review here more information on the webinar series.
