Patent Support Program: Arriva Mexico!

    No comments:
In developing an IP culture, Mexico is launching a ‘support program’. The idea is to assist inventors whose inventions may be capable of IP protection. To do so, the national IP office, IMPI, has united forces with the Mexico-United States Foundation for Science (FUMEC) and Nacional Financiera (NAFIN).

In general, it is highly noted that IP protection may contribute to the commercial activity in Mexico as well as its competitiveness in the collaboration with other countries. Therefore, the aim is to increase the number of patent applications and utility models and thus, adding value to the knowledge of inventors and entrepreneurs in Mexico.

Diving in (Mexico great sport)...to the project...yas!
With immediate effect the 2018 Call for he Patent Support Program is open (and valid until October this year).

What is this project about?
According to IMPI, the support offered ‘consists in providing specialized and free advice to Mexican developers’. It is directed at ‘entrepreneurs, independent inventors, researchers and entrepreneurs in the country, in order to provide them with tools for the protection of their inventions, their use and exploitation exclusively according to the Mexican legal framework.’

How does it work?
The services offered are:
• patentability analysis: examining the state of the art,
• advice regarding the writing of the application,
• delivery of workshops, among others.

It is open to the vast majority of sectors including IT, health, agriculture, environment, energy, to name a few.

Brazil on promoting and encouraging

    No comments:
Two different events but covering the same matter i.e. IP promotion, have occurred this month in Brazil. Indeed, the Brazilian Instituto Nacional da Propiedad Industrial (INPI) keeps promoting and encouraging innovation in Brazil. The action taken by Brazil this week covered the following:

Brazil and WIPO

An agreement is on its way. The Federal Government of Brazil and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will expand IP cooperation between Brazil and the developing countries within South-South - especially in Africa. The role of Brazil is to lead as a supplier of aid and resources. The collaboration will be in the second half of this year, in Mozambique, where the English-speaking African countries will indicate Brazil as International Authority for International Search and Preliminary Examination for the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). As it is common, the Brazilian partnership will include several activities such as technical cooperation with the national intellectual property offices, conducting courses and events, production of informational materials and discussion on the future of the international IP systems.

Brazil and France
Brazilian’s INPI and the French Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle (also INPI) held on March 2nd, the Innovation and Intellectual Property Workshop, in Rio de Janeiro. The event was aimed at discussing issues related to green patents and promoting the exchange of experience between the offices. Opening the event, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, former Prime Minister and 1st Vice President of the Senate, and Fondation Prospective et Innovation’s President, stressed the importance of adding aptitude to innovation and noted that this objective will be achieved by the establishment of partnerships and multilateral and bilateral agreements, being these one of the ways to form a global thinking in innovation and industrial development. To this, the INPI Patent’s director, Mr Julio Cesar Moreno, added that Brazil, which has been an innovator in research issues and sustainability, has ceased to be a spectator to be a well known exporter of this idea. Patricia Carvalho Reis, Brazilian INPI’s researcher also commented on green patents and stressed the importance of these patents to the economy mentioning that the project will ensure more flexibility in the examination of patent applications related to clean technologies. Then, the CEO of GDF SUEZ, Gerard Mestrallert intervened noting that there is the need also to “find new methods of innovation for the distribution of gas, water and electricity in order to create a new relationship between population and consumption of these networks”.

Peru: Learning how to exploit your GI product

    No comments:
The Peruvian Institute for the Defence of Competition and Intellectual Property Protection (INDECOPI) and the Organization of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are building together a set of seminars which would enable producers of Peruvian products to know more about the tools and strategies to be used to position Geographical Indication goods in the market.

We are talking about ‘traditional’ Peruvian products that have a designation of origin such as;. Pisco, Chulucanas , Pallar de Ica, Café Villa Rica, Loche de Lambayeque, Café Machu Picchu ; among others. The focus is to explain how GI goods can achieve business success and to give some tips in marketing strategies. Furthermore they are giving a tool to exploit a product that has a specific quality that no other product has in the market. It is recognised that products with designation of origin may aim to a more demanding public, willing to pay a higher price.

The first national workshop which took place last Monday the 8th was called: "Conditions for the effective use of appellations of origin as tools to compete in the marketplace." This was followed by another one held on the 9th called: "Food quality linked to origin and traditions of Latin America".

Until Friday 11th, representatives from different countries will be presenting the results of other pilot programs developed under the FAO project.
