Brazilian next wanna-bees: local apicultural activity

    No comments:

The Brazilian Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial (INPI) has received a Denomination of Origin application for Manguezais de Alagoas for propolis.

The application was brought by the coordinator and also the consultant of the Project Red propolis of Alagoas Sebrae/AL. The president of Uniprópolis and producer of propolis Mario Calhoun supported the application as well.

The red propolis of Alagoas occurs in the coastal and lagoon of the State of Alagoas, a small state in north-eastern, Brazil. The propolis botanical origin is a leguminosae plant (scientific name: Dalbergia ecasthophilum).

According to studies conducted by the University of São Paulo, the red propolis contains medical properties such as: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic and is used by pharmaceutical companies from various countries.

According to INPI’s information, obtaining the registration of Geographical Indication does indeed “contribute to the development and enhancement of production of micro and small beekeepers in the region. Moreover, recognition of the originality of the product will increase Brazil's participation in international propolis, making the product more competitive.”

Surely if the application succeed the red propolis of Alagoas is going to ‘bee happy’
